Bank holiday pharmacy access: arrange medicines before 31 August

People in England, Wales and Northern Ireland should check their regular medication now and contact their usual pharmacy as soon as possible. Monday 31 August 2026 is a bank holiday, so community pharmacies may close or operate reduced hours.

Check regular medicines before Monday

Do not wait until medication has run out. Check each prescription medicine, including anything needed daily or at a particular time, and confirm whether the available supply will last beyond the bank holiday.

Before Monday:

Bank-holiday dates differ across the UK

The UK Government bank-holiday calendar lists different summer bank-holiday dates for Scotland and the other three UK nations.

Scotland has already observed its summer bank holiday, so 31 August is not the equivalent Scottish holiday.

NHS 111 can help when a prescription supply runs out

Someone who cannot obtain a prescription in time may be able to use the NHS 111 emergency-prescription service. The online service asks questions and, where the patient is eligible, may direct them to a participating pharmacy that can provide a limited emergency supply of prescribed medicine.

This route is intended for prescribed medication that is needed urgently. It does not replace routine prescription ordering, and access to a supply is not guaranteed. People who cannot use the online service can call 111.

Confirm pharmacy hours before travelling

Opening arrangements vary by pharmacy, including between branches in the same area. Use the NHS pharmacy finder to locate nearby services and review their listed contact and opening information.

Check the specific bank-holiday hours and contact the pharmacy directly before setting out. An ordinary weekly timetable may not reflect arrangements for 31 August, while participation in the NHS 111 emergency-prescription route can also vary.

Use emergency services for a medical emergency

Emergency-prescription assistance is not the right route for a life-threatening medical emergency. Call 999 or go to A&E when immediate emergency care is required.

For an urgent medical problem that is not life-threatening, NHS 111 can advise what service is appropriate. Anyone uncertain about medication should seek advice from a pharmacist or another qualified healthcare professional rather than changing a dose or stopping treatment without guidance.
