GCSE Results Day 2026: Prepare Before Opening Your Grades

By GlobeBids Education Desk | Published 18 August 2026

GCSE results are due on Thursday 20 August 2026 for candidates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Before results arrive, confirm how your school will release them and keep the details of your intended college, sixth form or training provider nearby. Scotland follows a separate National Qualifications timetable.

Prepare these details before Thursday

Schools may distribute results in person, online or through another stated arrangement. Check the latest message from your school or exam centre rather than assuming previous years’ procedures apply.

  • Confirm the collection time, location or online-access instructions.
  • Test any required account login and make sure you can access your email.
  • Bring identification if your school has requested it.
  • Charge your phone and save the admissions number for your intended destination.
  • Keep your offer conditions, applicant number and enrolment instructions available.
  • Write down questions you may want to ask before the day becomes busy.

If you cannot attend, ask the school in advance whether another person may collect results or whether an alternative arrangement is available. Permission and identification requirements can vary.

What to do after opening your results

If your grades meet the offer

Read every grade carefully, then follow the destination institution’s confirmation or enrolment instructions. Contact it promptly if the offer requires you to report results, upload evidence or complete another step by a deadline.

If your grades exceed the offer

Your existing route may still be the best choice, but you can ask your school and prospective institutions whether other courses or subject combinations are available. Do not give up a confirmed place until another option has been formally secured.

If your grades fall short

Speak to a teacher, careers adviser or exams officer before leaving school. Contact the college, sixth form or training provider because it may still consider the application or suggest another course or entry route.

Ask the exams officer for clear information about reviews of marking and exam appeals, including applicable deadlines, fees and who must submit the request. A review is not a guaranteed route to a higher grade; a mark or grade may remain unchanged and can sometimes move down as well as up.

Advice differs across England, Wales and Northern Ireland

Although candidates in the three countries share the 20 August results date, their qualification policies, post-16 routes and resit arrangements are not identical. Seek advice from your own school or exam centre, the relevant awarding organisation and the institution you hope to attend.

In England, the National Careers Service provides official exam-results guidance and support with education, training and career choices. Students in Wales and Northern Ireland should use their respective national careers and education services for country-specific information about resits and alternatives.

The Joint Council for Qualifications publishes the key examination and results dates used by its member awarding organisations. On Thursday, the most useful next check is the instruction issued directly by your school and destination provider.
