Luton drivers face 16 weeks of major junction works

By GlobeBids Editorial Desk

Drivers using one of Luton’s busiest junctions should allow extra time from Monday, 29 June, when a 16-week improvement scheme begins at the Hatters Way–Chaul End Lane roundabout.

The work will affect routes connecting Hatters Way, Chaul End Lane and Dallow Road. Traffic-management measures will remain in place throughout the scheme, with overnight closures scheduled during the first working week.

Detail Confirmed information
Work begins Monday, 29 June 2026
Expected duration 16 weeks
Main location Hatters Way–Chaul End Lane roundabout
Other affected road Dallow Road
Initial night closures 8pm to 5am, Monday to Friday in the first week

Four changes planned at the roundabout

The scheme will alter vehicle movements and provide new facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. The confirmed changes are:

  • A dedicated left turn from Hatters Way into Chaul End Lane.
  • Signal-controlled crossing facilities on Hatters Way and Dallow Road.
  • Removal of redundant cycle lanes, replaced by a shared pedestrian and cycle footway on the roundabout’s western arm.
  • Changes to the bus lay-by on Dallow Road.

Luton Council says the dedicated turn and wider junction changes are intended to help traffic move more efficiently. The authority has not specified the detailed design of the revised bus lay-by.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will be affected

Motorists travelling through Hatters Way, Chaul End Lane or Dallow Road are most likely to encounter delays or temporary traffic controls. The council has advised drivers to plan ahead and leave additional time for journeys while construction is under way.

Pedestrians and cyclists may face temporary restrictions around the work area before the new shared footway and signal-controlled crossings open. Bus users should also watch for arrangements around the Dallow Road lay-by, although no service changes have been announced.

Overnight closures begin in the first week

Nighttime closures are planned from 8pm until 5am between Monday and Friday during the week beginning 29 June. The council has not published a complete timetable for later restrictions, so road users should check current traffic-management information through one.network before travelling.

The project forms part of the Luton 2040 programme. Councillor Javeria Hussain, the portfolio holder for Public Realm and Sustainable Transport, said the highways team would work to limit disruption but urged motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time.
