Tour de France Trophy comes to Cockermouth for a free August 19 visit

Cycling fans will be able to see the Tour de France Grand Départ Trophy in Cockermouth on Wednesday 19 August, alongside the opening stage of the 2026 Lloyds Tour of Britain Women.

The free display will be in the event fan zone near the start and finish line in Cockermouth town centre. It is a public event and no booking is required, making it a straightforward stop for residents, visitors and race-day spectators.

The trophy visit offers a preview of the Tour de France Grand Départ’s arrival in Cumberland in July 2027. Cumberland Council says the trophy was also displayed in Maryport on 9 August during Taste Cumbria.

No start time has been published for the trophy display. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead for a town-centre event taking place around the race start and finish.

A trophy display alongside a 158.9km race stage

Cockermouth is making its debut as a host town for the women’s Tour of Britain. The opening stage starts and finishes in the town and is the event’s longest stage: 158.9km with 1,913 metres of ascent.

The route is set to travel through Frizington, Whitehaven, Lowca, Workington, Flimby, Maryport, Allonby, Silloth, Wigton, Caldbeck and Aspatria before returning to Cockermouth town centre. That places the trophy display at the centre of a day expected to bring elite women’s cycling through several Cumberland communities.

The Tour de France Grand Départ Trophy is linked to the 2027 race, when the opening stage is due to finish in Carlisle on Friday 2 July after beginning in Edinburgh. Riders are then scheduled to depart Keswick the next day, travelling through the Lake District and Lancashire towards Liverpool.

For local spectators, the Cockermouth display is an early chance to connect the 2026 women’s race with the larger Tour de France event planned for Cumberland the following summer.

Planning a visit on race day

The display is aimed at the general public as well as dedicated cycling followers. With no booking requirement or charge, visitors can attend the Cockermouth town-centre fan zone and view the trophy while the Tour of Britain Women stage is under way.
