The first weekend after A-level results is under way, leaving applicants without a confirmed university place—and some reconsidering an existing choice—looking at UCAS Clearing. Course availability can change as universities process decisions, so applicants should check their UCAS account, current vacancies and each provider’s costs and accommodation information before acting.
The Joint Council for Qualifications scheduled A-level results for Thursday 13 August 2026. UCAS describes Clearing as the process universities and colleges use to fill course places that remain available.
Check your UCAS application status first
Sign in to your UCAS account and read the current application status carefully. It should indicate whether you are eligible to use Clearing and whether any existing choices are still awaiting decisions.
Do not assume that missing expected grades automatically places you in Clearing. Equally, avoid giving up an existing place or changing course without understanding how that action would affect your application. If the status is unclear, contact UCAS or the relevant university before proceeding.
Research the complete course, not just its title
A familiar course name can hide substantial differences in compulsory modules, assessment methods, placement opportunities and professional accreditation. Open the full course page and compare:
- Entry requirements and any subject-specific conditions
- Course modules, teaching format and assessment methods
- Campus location, travel costs and local living expenses
- Tuition fees and possible student-finance implications
- Accommodation availability, prices and contract terms
Check information on the university’s own website as well as current UCAS vacancy listings. A course seen earlier may no longer have places, while another could appear after universities update their decisions.

Contact the university before adding a Clearing choice
Call the university’s Clearing number or use its stated contact channel. Have your UCAS details, results and questions ready. Ask whether the course is currently accepting applicants and explain your qualifications accurately.
Record the course name and code, the person or team contacted, any deadline, and every condition attached to the response. Ask when accommodation can be requested and whether accepting late affects the range of rooms available.
An encouraging telephone conversation or email is not, by itself, a confirmed university place. Treat it as an informal indication unless the provider explains that an offer has been made and tells you how to proceed through UCAS.
Add a choice only through the official process
Follow the university’s instructions and add a Clearing choice through your UCAS account only after the provider has agreed that you should do so. Check the course code and institution carefully before submitting it.
Admission is not guaranteed merely because a vacancy was advertised or a university discussed the course with you. The decisive next check is your UCAS account for the application outcome, alongside the university’s current course, accommodation and payment information.
