Wednesfield traders move into new stalls on 18 August

Wednesfield Market traders are due to begin operating from the first four new stalls on Tuesday 18 August. The purpose-built units are on Wednesfield High Street in Wolverhampton and are intended for the general public visiting the established market.

No admission price or booking requirement has been provided, and the council has not published a start time. Visitors can attend the market on the confirmed opening date, but should avoid relying on a specific hour until further details are available.

First four stalls bring lighting and power to traders

The four installed units replace outdated market stalls and give traders facilities that were not available in the old structures. Each new stall has its own lighting and internal power source, creating a more consistent market layout while addressing practical needs for stallholders.

Jon Paul Allen, a Wednesfield Market trader providing key-cutting and shoe-repair services, said accessible power and individual lighting would make the stalls more fit for purpose. He said traders were looking forward to using them and described the market’s future as bright.

The first installations are one stage of a larger programme. Additional stalls are being manufactured and are expected to arrive over the coming weeks, although no individual installation dates have been confirmed.

Wednesfield High Street works continue around the market

The new stalls form part of wider improvements across Wednesfield town centre, with the overall scheme scheduled for completion in November. Most of the stall funding was secured through the Government’s Pride in Place Impact Fund.

Alongside the market changes, the project includes improved paving, lighting, planting and seating on the High Street. Plans also cover pedestrian crossings, access from Bentley Bridge and Lichfield Road, and clearer approaches from nearby car parks.

Bealeys Fold is due to receive paving, landscaping, lighting and wayfinding improvements intended to guide more people towards the centre of the High Street. A new space for events and activities is also included in the scheme, giving the upgraded market infrastructure a role beyond regular trading.

Councillor Qaiser Azeem, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Resident Services, said the new stalls would support traders and improve the customer experience. Wolverhampton North MP Sureena Brackenridge said local traders had raised the need for better stalls and that the investment was intended to support existing businesses and attract new ones.
