Avanti West Coast to enter public ownership on 7 March 2027

Avanti West Coast services are due to transfer to public ownership on 7 March 2027, the Department for Transport announced on 28 September. The change will affect passengers on the West Coast Main Line, including journeys through London Euston and Manchester. When will Avanti West Coast change operator?

The government says it will take control of Avanti West Coast services from 7 March 2027. Until that date, the announced transfer does not itself change who operates a journey booked for today or the coming months.

Avanti runs intercity services from London Euston to destinations including Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow and North Wales. The ownership date matters across that network, but it should not be read as a promise that every route or journey will improve on the day of transfer.

What is planned before and after the transfer?

The Department for Transport announcement sets out three separate plans alongside the ownership change:

• December 2026: timetable amendments are expected to begin. Passengers should check the published timetable for their route when details become available.
• By the end of 2027: the government plans an extra £10 million for power and signalling maintenance.
• Over three years: the government plans £50 million of investment at London Euston.

These are announced changes and spending plans, not completed service fixes. Maintenance work and station investment may take time to affect the passenger experience, and the announcement does not establish how an individual train will perform.

What should passengers check for journeys now?

Use the timetable and live disruption information for the date you are travelling, especially if you need to make a connection or use London Euston. The March 2027 ownership date is not a substitute for checking the status of a particular service.

For travel from December, the next useful milestone is the publication of the amended timetable. Check your specific departure and arrival times once those details are available, even if you regularly take the same train.
