Bishop’s Castle High Street will become a four-day creative hub from 3 to 6 September, when vacant shops and underused buildings open as temporary retail and exhibition spaces. Bishop’s Castle Is Open is free, open to the public and aimed at residents, day visitors and people attending the annual Michaelmas Fair.
Pop-up shops, exhibitions, workshops and creative activities will be spread across previously empty premises. The programme will feature artists, makers and a Lush pop-up, giving visitors more places to explore while they are in the town centre.
The four-day event at a glance
- Dates: Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 September 2026
- Location: Vacant and underused spaces along Bishop’s Castle High Street, Shropshire
- Entry: Free and open to the public
- Programme: Pop-up shops, exhibitions, workshops and creative activities
- Nearby event: The annual Michaelmas Fair
The event does not have a single conventional venue. Visitors should expect different activities to occupy several High Street properties, although the published announcement does not assign individual exhibitors or sessions to specific units.
Empty units become temporary creative spaces
Bishop’s Castle Is Open began with conversations between Bex Hunter of The Castle Hotel and Deb Alma of the Poetry Pharmacy. Both were concerned by the growing number of empty properties in the town and began considering how those spaces could be put to temporary use.
Their proposal draws on the idea of “meanwhile spaces”: vacant buildings or commercial units used for a limited period between permanent tenancies or redevelopment. Such arrangements can give artists, small businesses and community organisations somewhere to operate while returning activity and visibility to otherwise closed premises.
The project developed through a partnership with Shropshire Growth Hub, which has experience of temporary retail through the Shropshire Artisan Showcase in Shrewsbury. That initiative allows makers and creative businesses to test products in a pop-up setting and meet customers without immediately committing to a permanent shop. Its most recent showcase took place in May 2026.

Pop-ups will run alongside the Michaelmas Fair
Scheduling Bishop’s Castle Is Open for the same four days as the Michaelmas Fair is intended to provide another reason for fair visitors to spend time on the High Street. Instead of concentrating the programme in one building, the project uses the town’s vacant units as part of the visitor route.
For participating artists and makers, temporary premises provide an opportunity to display work, try a retail concept and reach customers. Organisers also hope the pilot will demonstrate whether short-term use can support creative enterprise and help other Shropshire towns consider similar approaches.
Bex Hunter said the response from artists, makers and property owners had been strong, with Lush also preparing to operate a pop-up in the town. Shropshire Growth Hub officer Anna Sadler said temporary retail can help businesses test ideas, build confidence and reach new customers.
Details to check before visiting
Bishop’s Castle Is Open runs along the High Street from 3 to 6 September and is open to the general public without an advertised entry charge. Visitors can combine the pop-ups with the Michaelmas Fair, which is taking place during the same period.
The published event information does not give daily opening times, individual unit addresses, a separate booking process, transport guidance or accessibility arrangements. Visitors planning around a particular workshop, exhibition or pop-up should therefore note that detailed schedules and premises have not yet been supplied.
