Cardiff Music City Festival returns for 16 days

Cardiff Music City Festival 2026 will run from October 2 to October 17, turning venues across Cardiff into stages for live performances, talks, exhibitions, pop-ups and immersive events. Cardiff Council confirmed the dates in its September 8 update, alongside a programme stretching from grassroots gigs to major international artists.

Three established music events anchor the programme

Cardiff Council says three Mercury Prize nominees will appear during the festival. The programme will also include exclusive UK performances and immersive happenings, although the update does not name the nominated artists or identify which appearances will be exclusive.

A seven-hour installation will reshape the Temple of Peace

One of the programme’s most distinctive confirmed events will take place inside the Marble Hall at Cardiff’s Temple of Peace. Welsh composer, musician and sound artist Richard James will present a newly commissioned live performance and sound installation under his Evolution Of Beauty alias.

James, formerly of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, will combine analogue synthesisers, field recordings, spoken word and acoustic and electronic elements. Looping, sound effects and improvisation will be used to explore harmony, disharmony and the natural resonance of the Marble Hall.

The installation is planned to last seven hours, making it an extended work rather than a conventional concert-length performance. Its use of the hall’s acoustics also places the venue itself at the centre of the piece.

Planning depends on the next programme details

The confirmed festival window gives prospective visitors 16 days to consider, but the council update is an overview rather than a complete event schedule. It establishes the city-wide format and principal programme strands without providing venue-by-venue dates, admission terms or reservation instructions.
