Carlisle International Market: free entry from Thursday

Carlisle International Market will fill the city centre pedestrianised area from Thursday 27 August to Bank Holiday Monday 31 August. Entry to the open-air event is free, no booking is required, and the market opens at 9am on Thursday.

The five-day event is open to the general public, including residents, regional visitors and families looking for food, crafts and gifts over the Bank Holiday weekend. Cumberland Council says traders brought together by Market Place Europe will offer international dishes, fresh produce and artisan goods in the heart of Carlisle.

Opening hours change on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, so visitors should check the day before travelling.

Carlisle’s regular Friday market will also operate on 28 August. Its local traders will be based at the top of English Street and in the grounds of Carlisle Cathedral, alongside the larger international event elsewhere in the city centre.

Global food and handmade goods across the city centre

The food selection ranges from gyros, kebabs, curries and tagines to Afro-Caribbean street food. Burgers, hog roast and dirty fries will also be available, together with a selection of beers and wines.

Dessert stalls are due to sell macarons, tiramisu, baklava, Turkish delight and Portuguese tarts. The broad mix means visitors can choose between familiar market food and dishes associated with traders from Europe and beyond.

Away from the food stalls, the Carlisle International Market will feature handmade jewellery, clothing, candles, garden ornaments and other artisan products. Arts, crafts, fresh produce, speciality items and gifts will complete the market’s retail offering.

Visitors comparing Bank Holiday food events elsewhere in northern England can also see the programme for Bolton’s free food festival, which runs across the same weekend.

A ceremony dating Carlisle’s fair rights to 1352

The first morning includes a civic tradition separate from the trading stalls. An ancient Proclamation will be recited at the Market Cross at 10am on Thursday 27 August, declaring Carlisle’s right to hold an annual August fair—a right granted to the city’s citizens by King Edward III in 1352.

A procession will travel from the Old Town Hall to the Market Cross. It is due to include Mayor of Carlisle Anne Glendinning, Cumberland Council chair Andy Semple, Sword and Mace Bearers and other civic dignitaries.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said the international and regular Friday markets would bring traders, residents and visitors together over the weekend while giving people a chance to support businesses and explore the city centre.

What visitors can confirm before setting out

The confirmed venue is Carlisle city centre’s pedestrianised area, and there is no admission charge or advance booking requirement. The council notice does not list dedicated transport arrangements or specific accessibility provision.

Visitors attending on Friday can combine the international stalls with Carlisle’s weekly market at English Street and Carlisle Cathedral. Cumberland Council directs visitors to its social media channels or the Market Place Europe website for event updates.
