Free Gartcosh steelworks exhibition opens in October

Photographs, personal recollections and family memories will bring the Gartcosh Cold Reduction Mill back into view at a free community exhibition this October.

The Gartcosh Steel Works exhibition will run from Thursday 15 October to Sunday 18 October 2026 at Gartcosh Community Facility. Admission is free, and the event is intended for residents, former steelworkers, their families and anyone interested in local industrial history.

A steelworking community told through its own memories

The exhibition focuses on the mill, the people whose livelihoods were connected to it and the relationship between the steelworks and Gartcosh village. Rather than presenting the site only through an industrial timeline, the material centres on the experiences of employees and their families.

Local researcher John Carroll has curated the exhibition after spending a year collecting photographs, stories and memories from people connected to the Cold Reduction Mill. The resulting display will offer a portrait of both the works and the community shaped around it.

Carroll said the exhibition would provide an opportunity to share those memories and celebrate the people who made the works a significant part of community life.

A year of collecting stories and images

The exhibition forms part of North Lanarkshire Council’s Your Heritage in Focus programme. The project is designed to capture and preserve accounts associated with Gartcosh Steel Works while those personal and family connections can still be documented.

Its scope extends beyond machinery or buildings. The supplied material places employees, their relatives and village life at the centre of the story, showing how an industrial site can also become part of a community’s shared memory.

A separate Heritage Social will precede the exhibition on Saturday 12 September, from 2pm until 6pm at Gartcosh Works Social Club. That free drop-in event will include film footage of the mill, first-hand recollections and anecdotes, with a programme repeated hourly and refreshments available during the afternoon.

What visitors can expect in October

The October exhibition will draw together the photographs and accounts gathered during Carroll’s year-long research. Visitors can expect material reflecting work at the Cold Reduction Mill as well as memories of the people and families connected to it.

For former employees and their relatives, the display offers a chance to see personal experiences placed within a broader community record. For residents and local history enthusiasts, it provides a source-based look at how the steelworks and Gartcosh developed alongside one another.
