Free ‘Tales from the Forest’ Pooh trail near Leek on 22 August

Families can step into the world of Winnie the Pooh at Coombes Valley RSPB Reserve, near Leek, on Saturday 22 August 2026. The free Tales from the Forest: Winnie the Pooh Centenary Celebration runs from 10am to 1pm and is designed for children aged 4 to 11 with accompanying adults.

Places are limited, so advance booking is essential. According to Staffordshire County Council, the event forms part of the character’s centenary celebrations and the National Year of Reading.

A Pooh story trail through Coombes Valley

The event takes its celebration beyond a conventional indoor storytelling session. Families will follow a Winnie the Pooh-themed story trail around the reserve, with stories and activities incorporated into the woodland experience.

The route will give children opportunities to use their imaginations while exploring the natural setting. Its combination of reading and outdoor discovery reflects the event’s stated aim of encouraging a love of books while helping families connect with nature.

Staffordshire Libraries and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council are organising the event. Hayley Coles, Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for communities and culture, is due to attend as part of the storytelling team.

Crafts, bees and wildlife along the route

Storytelling is only one part of the programme. Children will also be able to take part in craft activities, search for bees and look out for local wildlife as they make their way around the reserve.

For families deciding whether the event suits their children, the format is centred on participation rather than simply listening to a reading. The themed trail links the story with the surrounding woodland, while the crafts and nature activities provide different ways for children in the advertised age range to engage with the day.

The council describes Tales from the Forest as a family event bringing together storytelling, nature and family fun. No performers other than the participating storytelling team are named in the published announcement.
