Wanstead pupils face another wait as project resets

Redbridge Council has completed its review of the unfinished education block at Wanstead High School and is preparing to select a contractor capable of completing it. The school building will take priority over the wider Wanstead Leisure Centre development, but the council’s August 2026 update does not name the replacement contractor or provide a completion date.

Council leader Kam Rai said the immediate aim is to prevent another school year from being affected. Pupils and staff have already waited longer than planned for the promised classrooms and facilities, while the unfinished construction site continues to occupy part of the school grounds.

Site review establishes what work remains

The council commissioned a detailed review after problems with the original contractor brought progress to a halt. The assessment examined which parts of the education block had been completed, whether that work met the required standards and what remained outstanding.

That review is now finished, giving the council a clearer basis for appointing a new contractor. However, the public update does not itemise any defects, quantify the remaining work or state how much additional time will be needed.

The council says the next contractor must have the expertise, capacity and delivery record required to finish the building properly. Its stated priority is not simply to reopen the site quickly, but to avoid repeating the performance problems that contributed to the present delay.

Contractor failures went beyond insolvency

Jerram Falkus, the original contractor, entered insolvency before completing the education block. Redbridge Council has now made clear that the company’s collapse was not the sole cause of the disruption.

According to the council’s account, Jerram Falkus had already fallen short of expected performance standards during construction. Those problems were compounded by the insolvency, leaving the authority to determine the condition of the completed work and arrange a new route to delivery.

Rai also acknowledged the council’s own role. Redbridge awarded the contract and was responsible for overseeing the project, meaning responsibility for the outcome does not rest solely with the failed contractor.

Pupils remain the first priority

The unfinished block means Wanstead High School pupils are still waiting for the additional classrooms and facilities planned for the site. The council says it is working with the school and other stakeholders to understand the difficulties caused by the delay and reduce their effects where possible.

Health and safety controls remain in place to separate the construction area from the school’s daily operations. No change to those arrangements has been announced while the replacement-contractor process continues.

The council’s revised order of work places the education block ahead of the leisure centre. That decision is intended to focus available effort on completing the school facilities before a further academic year is disrupted.

Leisure-centre plans remain on hold

Redbridge says it remains committed to the proposed Wanstead Leisure Centre and the wider vision for the site. Work on moving that part of the development forward will follow once a firm route for completing the school building has been established.

The update provides no revised construction timetable or opening date for the leisure facilities. For prospective users, that means the project remains planned but without a confirmed delivery schedule.

Parents, residents and other stakeholders are also expected to receive a new regular forum where council officers can provide updates, answer questions and hear concerns directly. Details of when the forum will begin have not yet been released.

The next verifiable milestone will be Redbridge Council’s confirmation of the selected contractor, accompanied by the proposed next steps and a timetable for completing the Wanstead High School education block.
