Football Museum of Wales Opens Free in Wrexham on September 25

Hoarding around Wrexham’s historic County Buildings is due to come down in late August, revealing a substantially expanded museum behind the restored exterior. The Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum will open there at 10am on Friday, September 25.

Admission will be free, although visitors will need to wait for the ticket-booking procedure, which Wrexham Council says will be announced shortly. The attraction is intended for local residents, football supporters, families and visitors interested in the history of Wrexham and Wales.

The redevelopment has retained the character of the Grade II Listed County Buildings while creating new exhibition space and a contemporary visitor experience. Wrexham Council describes the project as an entirely new venue rather than a conventional refurbishment of the previous museum.

The Football Museum of Wales will provide access to the National Wales Football collection and explore the country’s football heritage. Wrexham Museum will continue the local strand, covering the stories, communities and achievements that have shaped the county.

That combination gives the venue a broader purpose than a museum devoted solely to the sport. Football fans can explore the national collection, while residents and other visitors will also find material focused on Wrexham’s wider history.

Council leader Mark Pritchard said Wrexham’s position as the birthplace of Welsh football helped make the city an appropriate home for the national museum. Heledd Fychan, the Welsh cabinet minister for culture and sport, said the attraction would bring Welsh football heritage to life while celebrating Wrexham’s communities and history.

The redevelopment was supported by Wrexham Council alongside the Welsh Government, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Transforming Towns, UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund, the Wolfson Foundation and the V&A Purchase Grant Fund.

What visitors will find after the doors open

The council says the redesigned museum will offer an immersive heritage experience within significantly expanded premises. Its confirmed highlights include the National Wales Football collection, local-history displays and the restored fabric of the listed building.

International interest has already emerged, according to Wrexham Council chief officer Ian Jones, who said the authority had received messages from overseas visitors hoping to see the football collection while travelling in the region.

A detailed opening-day programme has not yet been published, so there is no confirmed schedule for ceremonies, tours or other activities. The announcement establishes the opening time and the permanent visitor offer rather than a separate programme of launch events.

Visitors should watch for the official booking announcement before planning entry. Wrexham Council has not yet provided the booking method, an end time, detailed transport guidance or accessibility arrangements; it has confirmed only that the County Buildings venue is in Wrexham city centre.
