Holderness Road consultation: Free Hull session on 3 September

People who live, work or socialise around Holderness Road can attend a free public consultation at Hull Guildhall on Thursday 3 September 2026. The session runs from noon until 4.30pm and is open to residents, businesses, visitors, and property and landowners within the Holderness Road West Conservation Area.

Hull City Council is seeking views on proposed updates to the area’s character appraisal and management plan. The wider consultation remains open until Sunday 27 September, so people unable to attend the Guildhall session can still submit comments.

The public session will be held at Hull Guildhall on Alfred Gelder Street.

What the conservation-area proposals cover

The consultation concerns a proposed new character appraisal and management plan. These documents identify the features and buildings that contribute to the area’s special interest and provide guidance relevant to future development and planning applications.

The proposals follow a new survey undertaken as part of Hull City Council’s strategic review of all 27 conservation areas in the city. According to the council, the survey confirmed the significance of Holderness Road West’s collection of late Victorian and Edwardian commercial, industrial and residential buildings.

The proposed appraisal identifies important architectural features and buildings considered to be of key interest. The management plan addresses how the area’s character can inform future changes. Councillor Paul Drake-Davis, the council’s portfolio holder for economic renewal and housing, said the aim was to maintain Hull’s heritage while ensuring buildings remain suitable for modern use.

The affected area extends into adjoining streets

Holderness Road West Conservation Area runs from the Mount Pleasant crossroads to the junction with Witham and Clarence Street. It also covers sections of side streets branching from Holderness Road.

The invitation is therefore not limited to homeowners. People who operate businesses, own property or land, visit the area, or spend time there socially are also being encouraged to comment. Their responses will contribute to the consultation on how the area’s recognised character and future development should be approached.

How to respond by 27 September

People who cannot attend on 3 September can take part online through Yoursay Hull. A copy of the consultation document is also available to view at the Guildhall reception.
