Tour of Britain in Cockermouth: August 19 bus changes

Spectators and bus passengers in Cockermouth should prepare for temporary stops, diversions and possible delays on Wednesday 19 August, when the opening stage of the Tour of Britain Women starts and finishes in the town.

The event is free, open to the general public and requires no booking. Event and traffic arrangements in Cockermouth run from 4am until 6.30pm, while the riders will cover a 158.9km route through west and north Cumberland before returning for the finish.

Cumberland Council says most buses will continue operating, but rolling road closures may cause delays of around 15 to 20 minutes. Visitors planning a cycling-focused day can also read about the free Tour de France trophy display in Cockermouth.

When the race will reach Cumberland communities

The stage passes through Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport, Allonby, Silloth, Abbeytown, Wigton, Caldbeck, Aspatria and Cockermouth. These are approximate windows supplied for the race, and lead vehicles may arrive about 15 minutes before the cyclists.

Services X4, X5 and 600 will not use their usual Main Street and school stops on the east side of Cockermouth.

From 9am to 11.30am, passengers should board at the Crown Street stops near Aldi. Between 4am and 9am, and again from 11.30am to 6.30pm, buses will use both those Crown Street stops and the Fairfield Junior School stops on Sullart Street.

Service 68 will use the same temporary arrangements. Signs will be placed around Cockermouth to direct passengers to the correct boarding points.

Six services have specific timetable changes

The temporary amendments apply on Wednesday 19 August:

  • Service 60: The 10.43am departure from Workington will terminate at Silloth at 1.35pm instead of continuing to Skinburness. The 11.47am departure from Skinburness will start from Silloth at 11.55am.
  • Service 400: The 12.40pm departure from Carlisle will terminate at Wigton at 1.15pm. The 1.42pm departure from Silloth will begin at Wigton at 2.09pm.
  • Service 554: The 2pm departure from Carlisle and the 1.15pm departure from Keswick will operate as service 553.
  • Service 600: The 1.40pm and 2.40pm departures from Carlisle will travel via Aspatria to Wigton. The 1.23pm and 2.23pm departures from Whitehaven will travel via Aspatria to Cockermouth.
  • C123 Cockermouth Town Service: The service will not operate that day.
  • Service 68: Temporary Cockermouth stops will apply.

Other services could still be held as the riders and race convoy pass. Rolling closures are expected between approximately 10.40am and 4.30pm, with roads reopening when it is safe.

Road closures and spectator parking

Main Street and Station Street in Cockermouth will close from 4am to 6.30pm. South Street will close from 7am to 5pm, while Crown Street, Sullart Street and Gallowbarrow will close between 9am and 11.30am.

The A595 between Bothel and Cockermouth is scheduled to close from 2pm to 3.45pm for the final sections of the stage. Cumberland Council says these timings are precautionary and closures may end sooner.

Town-centre parking includes Riverside long-stay car park and Fairfield short-stay car park. Cockermouth Rugby Club will serve as an overflow car park for race visitors.
