Fraserburgh Merchant Navy Day tribute 2026

Fraserburgh marked Merchant Navy Day on Thursday, 3 September 2026, with the raising of the Red Ensign at Saltoun Square. The ceremony honoured the men and women who sustained Britain during both World Wars and recognised those working at sea today.

Aberdeenshire Council representatives joined maritime, emergency-service and community organisations for the commemoration, according to the council’s account of the event.

Red Ensign honours service at sea

The Red Ensign, affectionately known as the “Red Duster”, was raised as the central symbol of the Merchant Navy Day ceremony. The flag represents recognition of merchant seafarers whose work supports the movement of essential goods to the UK.

Council figures presented at the ceremony said seafarers carry more than 95% of the country’s trade, including half of its food and much of its fuel. Around 24,000 men and women work at sea from UK shores, placing their service at the heart of economic security and everyday supply chains.

Maritime organisations join Saltoun Square ceremony

Local councillors and council officers attended alongside Mike Newlands, minister of Fraserburgh and District Parish. Representatives also came from Fraserburgh Lifeboat, the Mission, Sea Cadets, Salvation Army, Seafit, Fraserburgh Harbour, the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation and Moray East.

Gabriel Watt of Fraserburgh RBL Pipe Band played during the ceremony. Sarah-Jane Urmston of the Salvation Army performed the Last Post as Louise Runcie of Fraserburgh Sea Cadets raised the flag.

Fraserburgh’s connection with the sea

Councillor Doreen Mair, chair of the Banff and Buchan Area Committee, said the day recognised past, present and future Merchant Navy personnel, as well as families enduring long separations from loved ones.

She also pointed to the risks seafarers face from nature and unrest overseas, and said the safety of people working at sea remains embedded in daily life across Fraserburgh and the north-east coast.
